The process of muscle hypertrophy is a slow one and requires a lot of attention and hard work from an athlete’s end in order to excel in a sport like bodybuilding. While the debate between high-volume training vs. low-volume training has been going on for quite a while now, there is no denying that rest plays the most crucial role in the process of muscle gaining. And if one pushes too hard without taking proper rest, injuries are bound to happen. This year’s Mr.Olympia saw a significant number of athletes pulling out due to injury.
Shedding light on the same, eight-times Mr. Olympia Lee Haney recently talked about one mistake that many modern bodybuilders make. Educating the audience about the evils of overtraining, Haney disclosed that this can be one of the biggest reasons behind modern bodybuilders getting injured way too frequently and easily compared to bodybuilders from the golden era.

Lee Haney was the first bodybuilder ever to break Arnold Schwarzenegger’s perfect record of seven Olympia titles. Haney and Coleman still hold the record for the most Olympia wins. He explained during his time on ‘The Muscle Maturity Podcast,’ that back in his time, athletes used to focus more on mind-muscle connection rather than just lifting heavily. “One of the things that a lot of athletes gotta be careful of is uh they tend to think more is better. You know you never see Arnold injured or Serge Nubret, you never saw Franco.. You never saw injuries,” Haney recalled.
Opening up further, Haney revealed that he is working closely with many amateur athletes, and one similarity between many of them is that they often push too hard. “Too many of these guys these days..they train too heavy uh you know with not enough rest…I mean I’m working with several amateur athletes now and one of the things that I find that’s common is that they overtrain,” Lee Haney disclosed.
This came just days after the Mr. Olympia 2023. Even though CBum managed to win the Classic Physique title, the 28-year-old revealed during his short speech that he tore his lats 10 weeks prior to the contest. Last year, too, Bumstead had a torn bicep which made life difficult for him. Another big name that missed this year’s Olympia was Nick Walker, who was being considered as one of the hottest prospects this year.
Nick Walker’s unfortunate injury
While Walker was in an absolutely unbelievable condition, days before the contest, he made a shocking announcement regarding him pulling out of the contest. Walker informed fans that he is healing from a severe hamstring injury that happened “right before we actually came here (Orlando).”

Continuing further, he revealed, “I tried to push through it. I tried to do whatever I could get all the treatment that I could,” said the bodybuilder. However, “There was just no shot of us placing top three at this point,” confessed Walker, with tears in his eyes in the announcement video.

While the exact reason behind Walker’s injury remains undisclosed, Haney’s statement regarding modern athletes’ training way too intense might actually be true. What are your views on this? Let us know in the comments.
