In the world of bodybuilding, Mr. Olympia is one of the most prestigious events for bodybuilders. And each and every bodybuilder competes and aims to win the Olympia title. As Mr. Olympia 2023 is around the corner, contenders are pulling out all stops in their preparations. One of them is Chris Bumstead, a 4 time Mr. Olympia champion. Looking for a 5th title this year. With his regular commitment to training and conditioning.
Bumstead, through a recent YouTube video, offered insights into the very real challenges he faced on his journey. Surprisingly, it isn’t just about the hours of intense training but the unexpected injuries that come from the most normal tasks.

In the video titled “SHREDDED CHEST WORKOUT | OLYMPIA PREP,” Bumstead recounts a morning incident where he simply bumped into his cabinet. “I bumped into my cabinet this morning,” he said, pointing out the vulnerability of his physique at this juncture. While this may sound trivial to many of us, for him, it resulted in a painful bruise.
This wasn’t a one-off event. Bumstead goes on to describe another instance. “I literally broke my toe because there was a blanket on the ground,” where a misplaced blanket on the floor caused him to trip and injure his toe, rendering it black and purple.
Such accounts offer a stark contrast to the general perception we have of bodybuilders–robust and almost invincible. Instead, what emerges from Bumstead’s narratives is a picture of a dedicated athlete who is constantly navigating risks, even in day-to-day activities. He humorously mentions that he might need to “Wrap Myself in Buble Wrap” to keep away from such injuries, emphasizing the extent of his vulnerability. After all these setbacks he faced, he’s still looking to give his best appearance in the event.
Beyond setbacks: The road to excellence for bodybuilding
Yet, it’s not all about setbacks. Bumstead’s resilience shines through the video. He critically analyzes his weightlifting sessions, striving for perfection. He wonders if he had unconsciously set a limit for himself when he managed exactly nine reps in one of his exercises. Rather than being bogged down by it, he takes it in stride, looking at ways to challenge himself further.

In every repetition and exercise, Bumstead’s commitment to excellence is evident. He’s not just going through the motions, but ensuring every bit of his training counts. This undying commitment, in spite of the challenges he faces, sets him apart as a top contender. As the competition nears, his undeterred spirit, despite the need for some ‘protective measures’, promises an event that will be a must-watch. Bumstead will win this time?
