The seven-times Mr. Olympia, Phil Heath, has recently been observing a very close family member fighting against cancer. Suffering from body dysmorphia himself, he is inclined toward spreading awareness, about any such diseases. In the interview, Heath threw light upon one such disease that many Americans face.

In his latest Instagram post, Phil Heath featured his doctor, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. In the video, they talk about several topics but at one point, it distinctively pinpoints autoimmune disease. Heath observed that with Mr. Olympia 2023 right around, several bodybuilders often end up saying they could not reach their peak because of something akin to autoimmune struggles.

“Autoimmune diseases, which doc, I did not know that over 25 million f****** Americans has 80+ autoimmune diseases,” Heath said, revealing how common the disease was. The list of sufferers from the disease also includes one of the finest bodybuilders of the present time, Chris Bumstead. After winning four Mr. Olympias consecutively, CBum has made his presence quite prominent among his peers. As the recent discovery of his condition is more common than was thought, things are now more clear.
Autoimmune diseases are highly varied. Their intensity differs for every individual. CBum announced his condition back in 2018, also stating that the lack of awareness made it worse for him to relate to others.

Chris Bumstead’s IgA Nephropathy
Even before CBum won his first Mr. Olympia, he had confessed about the nightmarish trouble that he had to go through because of the incurable autoimmune disease. He identified it to be IgA Nephropathy, which hits an individual’s kidney and then affects the water balance in the body. Highly problematic for any bodybuilder, it often retains water in specific parts, making it hard for the bodybuilder to curate his physique as per his wish.
