Mike Mentzer was popular for his unbeaten 300 scores he achieved in 1978, becoming Mr. Universe in Acapulco. Will Tennyson is one of the fitness enthusiasts who is popular for online fitness-related content. Recently, he posted a video of himself on YouTube. This time he talked about Mike Mentzer and expressed his will to be like him for a week. Before he started training, he had his breakfast full of 60% carbs, 25% proteins, and 15% fat. It is a 2000-calorie breakfast, the bodybuilding icon, Mentzer used to have regularly. 

Along with this, he always preferred a glass of orange juice. Moreover, he did training with some weight-lifting exercises. Praising Mike Mentzer, he said, “he was the first bodybuilder ever to receive a perfect 300 score from the judges many feel that Mike changed the sport of bodybuilding.

Mentzer was the only bodybuilder who got the full score of 300. He has an inspiring legacy which is followed by aspiring bodybuilders to achieve desired fitness goals.

Who Was Mike Mentzer? 

Mike Mentzer was renowned as the “Heavy Duty,” star who was brought up in Pennsylvania. At age 12, he found his love for weight training and started doing it soon afterward. Until he was 15 years old, he would do bench press with 370 pounds. 

When he reached his 18, he participated in many bodybuilding competitions and won them. He was also a student of pre-medicine at the University of Maryland. However, he left that profession three years after serving in the US Air Force.

During his journey in bodybuilding, he suffered many injuries owing to which, he had to take a break of a few years from training. But he returned soon and registered victory at Mr. American in 1976 and Mr. Universe in 1977. He stood out as a pro in 1978 after winning Mr. Universe.

Mentzer attained an incredible score of 300 and won the heavyweight division of Mr. Olympia in 1979 and 1980. He was highly admired for his altercation with Arnold Schwarzenegger at Mr. Olympia. Even today, he is renowned for miraculous work and high-intensity training methods.

Mike Mentzer’s Workout Plan

According to Sportskeeda, Mike would train his body three days a week and used to take rest for the other 4 days. With this routine, he could maintain his greatest possible shape. He used to have a 4 to 7-day break between his training when he was an amateur in bodybuilding. 

Mike believed that even less workout was more than sufficient for his body. This led him to become a fervent supporter of Arthur Jones’ training theory known as High-Intensity Training, whose objective was to focus on quality rather than quantity. 

According to Mentzer, this training method was the most effective to see desired fitness outcomes. With this training method, one is likely to suffer fewer injuries. The risk of high and serious injury can be reduced. The bodybuilding icon never followed the ideology of lifting heavy weights and doing many repetitions.

As per IronMagzineforum. in 1978, Mike Mentzer became the first person to achieve a perfect score of 300 points on an international show called Mister Universe. No bodybuilder had ever done this before. Additionally, in the IFBB’s entire history, he is the only person to have ever done this.

Unique diet of the bodybuilding legend 

He used to have a good amount of calories to keep his body healthy and powerful. He had a perfect blend of exercise and nutrition that made his body illustrious with unparalleled muscle development.

Macronutrients, protein, carbs, and fats had been the most important parts of  Mike’s well-balanced diet or eating regimen. In the 1970s, when most fitness lovers used to be on a low-carb diet. It was Mentzer who continued the intake of 200 g of carbohydrates daily. He would eat pancakes and ice cream while getting ready for Mr. Olympia and still maintained his enormous body.

He used to eat protein-lauded food like – eggs and chicken. Although he was into fast food, He kept himself within his 2000-calorie restriction. Moreover, he would train twice a day and was highly active. He took a holistic approach to nutrition in terms of food sources.
