Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were in the public eye for most of their lives. While the Governator pioneered multiple arenas like a pro, Shriver dedicated her life to journalism. Born into the affluent Kenned family of Kennedy’s, Shriver thrived in an intellectual environment. Her career in journalism kick-started in 1977 and Shriver continues to stick to her journalism roots through her The Shriver Report Project.

But that’s not all. Shriver strives to find purpose in everything she does, and in her late sixties, the mother of four is more concerned about leaving an unparalleled impact on people’s lives. At 68, Shriver is spearheading a movement to fight Alzheimer’s along with her eldest son.

Maria Shriver had seen her father succumb to Alzheimer’s. After he was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative condition in 2003, the Kennedy princess decided she would make an effort to find a cure for it. “I also believe my mission is to wipe out Alzheimer’s disease once and for all because it is destroying millions of lives. Young and old. Patients and caregivers. And, it’s bankrupting our country,” she wrote on her website.

Witnessing her mom’s efforts to protect many families from the terminal illness, Patrick Schwarzenegger joined hands with Shriver to establish a brain health nutrition company, MOSH or Maria Owings Shriver Health. The mother-son duo built the company during the pandemic using Shriver’s decades of knowledge about the disease she closely observed and Patrick Schwarzenegger’s experience building multiple CPG businesses.

Launched on World Alzheimer’s Day in 2021, MOSH offers a variety of nutritious snack bars that could help in preventing the disease. The brand underscores the importance of diet in dealing with the condition affecting millions. The bars are enriched with superfoods such as ashwagandha, omega-3s, and lion’s mane and consist of 13 grams of protein. However, MOSH is not just an entrepreneurial venture.

Maria Shriver, who also spearheads the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, understands how women are disproportionately affected by the disease. “Two-thirds of those suffering from Alzheimer’s are women, and two-thirds of those who care about Alzheimer’s are women. Nobody knows why,” Shriver confessed to Forbes. So, the mother-son duo decided that a part of their venture’s revenue would go to the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement to fund gender-based research on the disease.

MOSH also recently launched its plant-based bars. This year has been great for the brand as Shriver and her son managed to raise a $3 million investment into the company to expand their retail distribution. The brand also secured over 100,000 customers and marketed $10 million worth of products.

The former NBC journalist has also been at the forefront of making the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research a reality. While Shriver has been mostly focused on MOSH growth of late, her journalism ventures are still intact.
