Renowned Hollywood actor and martial artist Michael Jai White’s recent fitness video has stirred up quite a storm on the internet. The 56-year-old’s unconventional approach to bicep curls left fitness and bodybuilding enthusiasts scratching their heads.

In a recent snippet shared by Men’s Health on YouTube, the 56-year-old shared his unique approach to bicep curls, which has sparked widespread discussion among fitness enthusiasts. White emphasized the importance of explosive movements, even when performing exercises traditionally done with slow, controlled reps.

White demonstrated his technique using a Smith machine, which guides the barbell on fixed tracks. He explained, “Even with curls, I fire. I’m doing explosive movements.” According to the actor, the goal is to maximize the intensity and speed of each repetition. He exclaimed, “The Smith Machine, it’s got the tracks and I fling that joker up as high as I can. By the 15th rep, it’s gonna be lower, but I’m still doing nothing but explosion and full contraction.”

Moreover, he highlighted that this method aligns with his background in martial arts, where explosive power is crucial. He stated, “Everything I do as a martial artist, I try to use explosive movements because that’s part of what I do.” This philosophy diverges from traditional bodybuilding practices that prioritize slow, deliberate movements with perfect form to build muscle. Evidently, it’s not about pumping iron for bulk to him. Instead, he clarified, “It’s not about the slow, bulky building. So I’m never trying to build bulk. It’s only about efficient movement for me.”

White’s approach emphasizes functional strength and efficiency over sheer muscle size. By focusing on explosive movements, he aimed to develop power and speed, which are essential in martial arts. The reaction from the bodybuilding community has been mixed. While some applauded White’s innovative approach, others were skeptical of its efficacy.
