Joan MacDonald’s way of getting fit is a testament to it. Half a decade ago, Joan MacDonald would never have imagined that she would be lifting weights. She had rising blood pressure and complications in her kidney and had also undergone hysterectomy surgery.

With a heavy dosage of medications for cholesterol and acid reflux, she barely knew what she could do to make her life better, but with the help of her integral support system, that is her daughter, she changes her life. Joan MacDonald recently took to her Instagram and shared a transformation picture of herself. The left one was when she was 57 years old and the right was when she was 77 years old. She began the caption by saying, “Never believe that you can’t turn your whole life around ❤️❤️When I was in my forties I had a hysterectomy leaving me with just one ovary….. I wasn’t advised on any kind of HRT, or hypopressives exercises or pelvic floor strengthening.”

Being new to the fitness journey, she did not know what to do. Experimenting with different diets, none of which worked, she ended up weighing over 200 Lbs at a height of 5’3. Finally, she got some help that turned her life upside down. She wrote, “It wasn’t until my seventies that I was able to turn my health around with the help of my daughter @yourhealthyhedonista and her husband @jeanjacquesbarrett . 🙏”

She has risen as a sensational fitness icon, captivating and inspiring people with her remarkable journey towards fitness. As an author, she has co-authored the book ‘Flex Your Age: Defy Stereotypes & Reclaim Empowerment” alongside her daughter, providing invaluable guidance for individuals embarking on a fitness journey at a more mature stage in life. She wrote, “I explain more about the power of mindset, building up your community, starting small, changing your eating habits, and getting started with resistance training in my book Flex Your Age.” Bodybuilding has undoubtedly changed her life around.

The Impact of Bodybuilding on Joan MacDonald’s Life

In one of her posts, MacDonald commented, “Your habits will either make time your enemy or your friend.” A few years ago, MacDonald’s health reached a point where she thought it was unrepairable. She could barely climb the stairs at her house and also suffered from arthritis. Finally, at the age of 70, when things started deteriorating so much that she knew she had to do something, she got into the bodybuilding world and took things into her own hands.

She wrote, “I won’t lie – it wasn’t easy. I had to learn about macros, create balanced meals, and even start lifting heavy weights in the gym.” At 77 years, she is a completely different and more confident woman who has amplified her self-love. Bodybuilding did, after all, work wonders in her life and she continues to cherish and work hard on it.
