76-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger once mixed alcohol with his protein shake as a joke. The seven-time Mr. Olympia joked that mixing schnapps with the protein shake would help the muscle absorb the protein faster. However, the hidden reality about supplements he exposed in his newsletter was far from a joke. Schwarzenegger wrote about banned substances in supplements.

Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that various brands adulterate their supplement with banned substances. Research has uncovered that over one-third of over-the-counter supplements contain “anabolic steroids, stimulants, and hormone modulators.” The bodybuilding legend explained how companies get away with such practices.

The 76-year-old wrote in Arnold’s Pump Club that “You Might Be Doping (And You Don’t Even Know It),” and may face adverse side effects in the long run. They can mess with your hormones and increase the risk of disease. Schwarzenegger explained that the findings serve as a “sobering” reminder that people shouldn’t blindly trust labels to make certain claims.

The former Mr. Universe also explained that the supplement industry has more issues than most people can “imagine.” However, the most egregious one is that supplement brands don’t have to test their products for the presence of these banned substances. The FDA also allows supplement companies to self-govern the claims they make on their labels.

Hence, even those who have the habit of reading labels might fall for marketing jargon. While Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote about banned substances, research has also found whey protein with amino spiking. Amino spiking is the practice of adding free amino acids to boost the protein content of the product. Studies have also found dietary supplements to be contaminated with heavy metals.

Hence, the Austrian Oak advised his readers not to blindly trust supplement brands. However, the former Mr. Olympia explained that people shouldn’t be scared of taking supplements. Arnie explained how someone can ensure their supplement is safe.

How to ensure your supplements are safe

The bodybuilding icon wrote about third-party testing. Those who don’t want to have supplements and preserve their peace of mind should buy brands that invest in third-party testing and certification. “NSF Certified for Sport and Informed-Sport,” are two of the most trusted third-party testers who provide certification labels to brands that pass their rigorous testing.

Arnold Schwarzenegger advised his readers to not buy over-the-counter supplements that do not invest in certification. While certified supplements may be more expensive, they’ll ensure that people who consume them are getting what they pay for without the health risks.
