A dialogue from the movie Forrest Gump, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get,’ proved to be accurate in the case of Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth. As he recently took a genetic test for Limitless with Chris Hemsworth, the Nat Geo documentary series on longevity, the results revealed that Chris has two copies of the gene APOE e4, which is linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

While this certainly came as a shock to him, he still decided to include this part in the show as he wanted the viewers to understand the importance of getting yourself tested regularly and to spread the message about maintaining good brain health. The fitness icon had to make multiple changes in his lifestyle to enhance his longevity.

Doctors told Hemsworth that while this gene increases the chances of Alzheimer’s by eight to ten times, it doesn’t determine your fate. However, Hemsworth was told to look at this test as a blessing. The changes that he was supposed to make in his lifestyle at the age of 40 were the ones that most people don’t think about until their late 50s.

Talking about this with MensHealth.com, Hemsworth shared his honest reaction by stating, “It was a good kick in the a*se and a reminder to do whatever is in my power to give myself the best fighting chance,” said Hemsworth. “Whatever work I’m doing for my brain health benefits the rest of my body, we turned it into a positive,” he added.

Renowned in the fitness and bodybuilding sphere for his ripped physique, apart from just physical well-being, Hemsworth’s focus has shifted towards optimizing brain health as well. “Now, I’m incorporating more solitude into my life,” he revealed.

“I do a lot of meditation and breath work mostly during sauna and ice bath routines,” he says. “For me my favorite mindfulness work comes from the immersion in physical actives that allow me to be fully present and force me out of me head and into my body, in particular surfing.” Apart from this, he also tries to get better sleep at night and not use any screens or social media before bed.
