More than a sport that boosts one’s physicality, bodybuilding is a subject of debate and discussion, as every individual has a different approach to building muscles and mass. Even the bodybuilding legends who are popular for their remarkable accomplishments have their unique methods for body transformation. 

Dorian Yates is one such athlete who is hailed for his unlikely training and workout methods. Even though a decade has passed since he took retirement from the sport, he is always excited about sharing his experience and knowledge of weightlifting with his admirers. While sometimes he reminisces about his glorious Olympia victories 6 times on the stage, sometimes he teaches legitimate ways about bodybuilding. Recently, he did the same thing and stressed the importance of short dedicated training over long aimless training.

In a recent Instagram post, the bodybuilding monster, Dorian Yates posted a video of him saying, “We’re only done 50 minutes because it’s very efficient and very intense. Or we could be in there 2 hours and you wouldn’t probably feel wiped out because you’d just be pumping and going through it.” Yates emphasized, “Train Harder… Not Longer!”.

 

Along with the video, there was a caption that put forward logical advice for muscle gaining. He wrote in the caption that it is not about how long one spends in the gym, it’s about what that person doing in that time!  Talking about his Olympia-winning body and revealing his training routine, he continued saying that he built an Olympia-winning physique by training just 4x per week for only 45-50 minutes on average. What matters most to him is “Quality over quantity!”

Shedding light on his training mistake, he said that he went against the norm and used to train six days per week for 2-3 hours and doing upwards of 20 sets per body part. Calling him an analytical person, he added further that he researched just what it was that makes muscles grow.

He said, “From trial & error and from listening to my body, I adopted the HIT principles and refined them to suit my needs and body.”  Machines and free weights are the combined important parts of his high-intensity training principle. The former Mr. Olympia essentially said that the exercise one does depends on their body type and its unique requirements. Basically, whatever works best for you.

Of course, people still have questions regarding machines and free weights, which Yates also answers.

Machines or Free Weights?

 People wanted to know which one was more effective for muscle gain. Answering the question, Yates said that combining both of them is the best option. According to him, it was like blending the power of machines with the natural feel of lifting free weights.

Yates said, “When training in the gym, use both of these tools as a way to put stress on the target muscle,”  The combination of these tools gives a perfect balance for building a strong and well-defined physique.
