While Drake and Lamar have been at loggerheads for some time now, what actually led to their rivalry?

A callout that led to eternal rivalry

It all started when Drake’s popularity skyrocketed back in 2009 with his single Best I Ever Had. 2011 was the year when artists like J. Cole started becoming the new face of hip-hop, along with Drake releasing their debut albums. Champagne Papi’s run didn’t just stop there; he released his new album Take Care in 2011. The song, Buried Alive from the album, featured Lamar as well.

Then, in 2012, Lamar released his album God Kid Mad City, featuring Drake, which became an instant classic. This is where hip-hop critics started comparing both artists, and this sparked friendly competition among them. Lamar featured in Big Shawn’s track Control in 2013 and called out industry big guns along with Drake. This was the key point that turned the friends into eternal rivals, and to this day, they still drop diss tracks.
