Recently, Bjornsson took to his Instagram channel with 4.2 M followers to share how he thinks training till failure offers more loss than gain. “270kg beltless deficit deadlifts were on the menu today. It might surprise some of you to learn that going to failure every session is a great way to get injured but a terrible way to get strong,” the 6’9” Strongman giant wrote in the caption.

As he deadlifts in a carousel of clips from the gym, the 34-year-old reiterated, “I always leave something in the tank in these sessions. This remains true as I grow stronger and the weights get heavier but feel easier.” But why does Arnold Schwarzenegger believe training till failure will do bodybuilding magic?
The art of progressive resistance
The 7x Mr. Olympia sculpted his golden, ripped physique by training intensely at the Gold’s gym six days a week. Schwarzenegger credits his practice of training to failure for his muscle gains. Arnie, in his newsletter, revealed that one should push towards failure, and muscle growth happens in those final reps.

The progressive resistance helps the muscle to grow. However, one should be careful of the injuries. Schwarzenegger also offered a technique to differentiate between muscle soreness and impending injury. Muscle soreness won’t hurt while training, “But if it is real pain, like if you touch it you wince, take another day off. It’s not worth it,” Schwarzenegger noted in his newsletter.
