In bodybuilding, a well-balanced diet that includes green vegetables is often considered complete, as it helps in muscular growth. Green vegetables have long been emphasized as an essential part of a bodybuilder’s diet, by many bodybuilding enthusiasts. However, 4-time Mr. Olympia Champion Jay Cutler has recently challenged this popular notion. The legendary bodybuilder revealed that his expensive diet was not centered around green leafy veggies. 

While the green vegetables diet that is low in calories and high in fiber is often regarded as an excellent source of clean, nutrient-dense fuel for the body, Cutler had other preferences during his heydays. 

Jay Cutler explained why he didn’t consume many veggies

The 4x Mr. Olympia champion openly admitted that he did not consume a significant amount of green vegetables during his professional bodybuilding career. In his newsletter, ‘Jay Mail,’ Cutler acknowledged the health benefits of veggies, including their positive impact on digestion. However, he also highlighted a potential downside as such a diet has the potential to slow down digestion too much.

During his days of training, Cutler had exceptional dietary requirements as he was aiming to reach a weight of 300 lbs. To achieve the desired weight and to fuel his body for the intense training regime, he needed to consume around 1,000 grams of carbohydrates every day.

Cutler explained that while green vegetables are undoubtedly beneficial for most individuals, they wouldn’t have served the purpose for him. He added that veggies have a high fiber content that can impede digestion and potentially cause distress when consumed in large quantities. “They can also slow down digestion too much, which would put a lot of stress on my gut when eating around 1,000g of carbs every single day!” Cutler wrote in his newsletter. However, the legendary bodybuilder never compromised with his diet.

Cutler’s unique diet methods

Throughout Cutler’s career, he displayed an exceptional physique on the grandest stage of Mr. Olympia year after year. However, to achieve such perfection in his physique, he had to follow a strict diet. In one of his videos, the bodybuilding champion revealed that he used to consume two gallons of crystal light beverages to keep him hydrated while working out. He also tried strange combinations to get the maximum out of his diet.

Cutler used to mix his protein with Mountain Dew in order to get a good pump. However, his focus was less on the taste and more on the results. He once said, “I eat to get big, I don’t care what it tastes like”. Cutler’s diet choices revealed that he was aware of his body’s demands and how he should go with them.
