With the advent of the internet, the world has become a smaller place. While there was a time when it was even difficult to lay your hands on whey protein without any contact, teenagers these days are relying on performance-enhancing drugs and steroids more so than ever. Due to the unrealistic expectations set by the fitness community, patience is something that is really lacking in most lifters nowadays. Because of a lack of knowledge and experience in the first place, deaths and traumatic experiences due to anabolic consumption are increasing day by day.

The bodybuilding community has already witnessed the loss of many bodybuilding legends as well as fitness entities due to steroids. This makes it all the more important to spread awareness about the consequences of taking steroids. Moreover, many veterans also argue that without having a strong base in the first place, an enhanced physique can never match the level of an athlete who had a ton of experience as a ‘natty’ and then jumped on gear for further improvements. During a recently resurfaced clip, Tom Platz could be seen giving his two cents on the issue. He even touched on the topic of ‘machines vs. free weights’ briefly.

Many bodybuilding veterans have previously explained this by revealing that performance-enhancing drugs work best once a lifter has already exhausted their natural potential. It is best to start a cycle only after spending almost a decade in the gym. However, in an attempt to transform themselves as soon as possible, many young lifters hop into gear really soon. Platz points out that it is always wise to build a foundation first. Giving an exciting car analogy to explain this, he stated, “The drugs work, but if you don’t build a Ferrari, you’re gonna build a Ferrari first. So many brand new bodybuilders, they go to the drug so soon, they really don’t build the Ferrari.”

He continued by explaining that by being more attentive toward the reps and the form, one can see much more results without using any steroids or SARMS. “So the drugs really, It’s not really real muscle, it’s throwing water around,” he explained.

Platz further explained the difference between bodybuilders of the golden era and modern bodybuilders by educating the audience about the different training approaches taken by them.

Platz points out the contrast in training methods

While bodybuilders back in the day used to rely heavily on compound movements for the most part, modern bodybuilders have a lot more training equipment and machines available. Platz explained that due to modern bodybuilders’ obsession with machines, they often don’t have a balanced and symmetrical look.

‘Quadfather’ further explained, “I think modern-day bodybuilders think about transformers. The goal in mind is to look like a transformer… non-human character, and I think we’re missing the balance in the symmetry of the body that comes only from compound movements.”
