Arnold Schwarzenegger has carved a name for himself as a bodybuilder as well as an action movie superstar. This is due in no small part to the masters of the craft that shaped him into who he is today. One of those men was Kiyoshi Yamazaki, a master swordsman who helped the Austrian Oak play the sword-wielding warrior ‘Conan’ in the titular franchise. But in a depressing development, it appears the sensei won’t be taking on any more apprentices.

The world was saddened to learn of the demise of the former president of Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai, Japan’s premier martial arts dojo earlier today. With his contributions spanning the world of martial arts and cinema, his legacy will surely live on through his body of work. Schwarzenegger fittingly penned some emotional words to properly say ‘hasta la vista baby’ to one of his dear friends.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the experienced Hollywood actor, honored Kiyoshi Yamazaki, the Japanese martial artist who taught him sword fighting for the 1982 action-adventure movie “Conan the Barbarian.” Kiyoshi Yamazaki Kaicho held the important roles of overseas chief instructor and president at Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai, an organization dedicated to teaching and spreading traditional Japanese karate. He was born on August 16, 1940, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, and his initial martial arts training came from his father, who was a kendo teacher.

Revealing what he means to him, Schwarzenegger added, “He was a wonderful man and a fantastic teacher who made me believable as Conan the Barbarian with his sword training.” Schwarzenegger wrote, “I just heard the news that my sensei, Kiyoshi Yamazaki, passed away.” Moreover, he stated, “He played an important role in my life, he was a dear friend, and my thoughts are with his family,” he said.

Kiyoshi Yamazaki has also played a role in the lore of one of the most iconic pieces of fiction of all time. Before Denis Villeneuve’s iteration of ‘Dune’ hit theatres, the best-selling science fiction novel was adapted by David Lynch in 1984. The world-famous director entrusted Yamazaki as a stunt man and fight co-ordinator, an impressive feat considering how novel the film was for its time.

The Terminator icon confessed that he was not “self-made” as he credited Yamazaki for shaping him as the best swordsman for the movie. The action hero also coupled the heart-wrenching message with a few pictures of him with his mentor. To the unversed, the movie was the first hit for Arnold Schwarzenegger that paved his way for future success in Hollywood. Fans offered condolences as they empathized with their icon.

The recurring deaths in Schwarzenegger’s life prompted fans’ condolences

Less than a year ago Schwarzenegger found himself mourning the loss of another dear friend he’d known for over 50 years. Already saddened by the demise of Jim Lorimer, Arnold’s close confidante in his bodybuilding journey, this puts Schwarzenegger in another period of deep sorrow seeing two of his peers pass away with such little time between them. His fans however have made sure to let the Terminator know they’re all with him.

“The first pic looks like something out of anime. So cool!! Amazing body champ! Sorry for your loss and RIP,” wrote a heavy-hearted fan. “I’m sorry to hear this and for your loss, Arnold. The worlds loss truly,” wrote a fan empathizing with Arnie. “Sorry to hear about the loss of your sensei and friend Arnold,” mourned a fan.
