Tim Grover made a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he discussed his life and career. He shared that he started his journey as a trainer, even though he encountered challenges along the way. He said, “Well, here’s the thing. I did start as a trainer. So when I went to college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, like everybody else. So kinesiology was just getting started.”

Grover’s parents, who are from India, didn’t initially support his choice. When Jimmy Fallon asked him “Your parents were fine with this?” He replied “No, they weren’t, not at all. Both my parents come from India. So back in the ’80s, as a son of Indian parents, you got two options for a profession. Doctor being one, a doctor being the other. That’s it.”

He added, “I told them I wanted to train professional athletes. They goes, “What does that even mean?” You get vacation time, you get a two-week paycheck. I said, no, I said, I’m going to train professional athletes. And, you know, behold, everything I went through. And it ended up happening.” As the video continued, Grover talked about how he helped Michael Jordan get even better when he was at his best, playing for the Chicago Bulls. He explained the training techniques he used.

Tim Grover’s impact from 30 days to 15 years with Michael Jordan

When asked about how he trained Michael Jordan, Grover said he read a newspaper article about how Detroit’s tough style of play was bothering Michael Jordan. Jordan was tired of getting pushed around by his opponents, but he had gotten hurt during a training session with a coach before and wasn’t training regularly. Grover believed he could help Jordan, but he wasn’t sure if he’d get the chance. Eventually, he reached out to the Bulls and, after a while, had a talk with the head athletic trainer and the team doctor.

After a few interviews, Grover finally met with Jordan. He laid out his plan to help the young player become stronger and avoid injuries. Grover wanted to introduce a training program to get Jordan ready for the tough NBA competition. Jordan was unsure at first. He had a 25-year-old trainer with no experience in pro sports, telling him how to get better when he was already the NBA’s best player. But in the end, Jordan agreed to give it a shot. “I’ll give you 30 days,” Grover said. Tim remembers Jordan saying. “30 days turned into 15 years.”

Calling Grover just a physical trainer doesn’t tell the whole story. Yes, he’s really good at training the body, but he’ll tell you that a big part of his success comes from how he thinks. Even before he got famous, people admired him for his ambition and his never-give-up attitude. They’d say he attacked everything he did. But it was when he began working with Jordan that he really figured out his way of thinking. Talking to Jordan and learning from him gave Grover a unique way of looking at how athletes become successful.
