In 1979, the then-six-time Mr. Olympia starred opposite Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas, who lived until 103 and passed away in 2020.

Arnie’s old friend asked the Hollywood action icon about the leading men of the 1970s. While most leading men today have chiseled physiques, Rob Lowe asked if Arnie remembered actors who were in shape before he set the standard for the Hollywood physique.

Arnold Schwarzenegger recalled a memorable incident

While discussing actors in the 1970s who were in shape, Rob Lowee brought up Kirk Douglas. “Kirk Douglas was in great shape…” admitted the former Mr. Universe. Schwarzenegger recalled his experience working with Douglas and Ann Margaret in?The Villain (1979). Schwarzenegger considered himself lucky to star alongside the Spartacus star early in his career.

However, he recounted an unforgettable incident.?“He invited me over to his hotel room his room,”?said the seven-time Mr. Olympia. Schwarzenegger went to Douglas’s room without a clue about why the Paths of Glory star had invited him.?“I want you to show me exactly how to do it the right way,”?Douglas asked the bodybuilding icon.?“To do what the right way?”?asked Arnie.

“He bends down and he rolls out from underneath the bed, dumbbells! Son of a b***h had dumbles under his bed,”?Schwarzenegger told Rob Lowe. The legendary actor grabbed the dumbells and started curling in front of the Mr. Universe. Douglas asked Schwarzenegger to rectify his biceps curl technique. The Terminator actor described the incident as?“fantastic.”?However, Douglas also taught the bodybuilding icon.

Kirk Douglas helped mold the action star

Arnold Schwarzenegger said he thought it was great that he could talk to the great Kirk Douglas about bodybuilding. Arnie continued to provide the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea star bodybuilding tips. However, Douglas also helped Arnie in return. The actor often came up to Arnie before filming scenes and gave him advice on how to execute them.

The Predator star told Rob Lowe how much he appreciated Douglas’s gestures. Arnie revealed that he had grown up watching Kirk Douglas’s films. Working with the Hollywood legend so early in his career was a dream come true for the Austrian.
