Winning on the Olympia stage is no joke. It requires a lot of sacrifices from an athlete. Being on a strict diet, and often cutting down even water and sodium before a contest, bodybuilders often tend to face insomnia as a result. And if not that, the excitement and even nervousness of stepping on a bodybuilding stage can be overwhelming. Regardless, you need proper sleep for the body to be able to recover. It’s a fact every trainer at every gym will enlighten you with. But the 2023 Mr. Olympia Derek Lunsford has now revealed that he was only sleeping for 6 hours in the week leading to the tournament, due to his hectic routine.

The new Olympia champion, while hitting machine lateral raises with the GOAT himself stated, “I need to get some sleep…cause I slept about 6 hours this past week…probably the last four days.” To this, Coleman replied by guessing that he only slept for three hours two days in a row. Even though most fans were expecting Hadi Choopan to take the win for the second consecutive time, the judges declared Derek as the winner this year, following which he walked off the stage, leaving a debate open about civility in the sport. Even as most fans backed Hadi Choopan coming into the event, Ronnie Coleman had held the belief that Lunsford would take the crown this year.

.

He had said Hadi Choopan won in 2022 because of his superior conditioning. However, Coleman had also guessed that Lunsford would close the gap this year. It turned out that the 59-year-old had perfectly guessed how things would play out, as Hadi Choopan didn’t have a noticeable edge in conditioning this year.
