In the ever-evolving world of bodybuilding, the rise of social media influencers has sparked a heated debate among seasoned pros. Recently, the uncrowned Mr. Olympia, Rich Gaspari, weighed in on the phenomenon, particularly focusing on the meteoric ascent of Sam Sulek.

Sulek, a figure gaining traction in bodybuilding circles, has never stepped onto the competition stage. Instead, he has leveraged the power of social media to amass a substantial following. However, according to Gaspari, Sulek cannot make it big on the stage.

Rubbing shoulders with legends like Jay Cutler and Ronnie Coleman at the Arnold Classic 2024 expo, Sulek garnered praise from Cutler for his appearance. However, Gaspari, embodying the essence of old-school bodybuilding, holds a divergent perspective.

In a recent episode of Fantom podcast alongside Simon Fan, Gaspari didn’t mince words when asked about Sulek’s rise to prominence. “I mean, good for him, kudos to him,” Gaspari acknowledged, recognizing Sulek’s adeptness at navigating the digital landscape. Yet, he offered a blunt assessment, asserting, “I think if he competed, he’d be killed on the stage.” Gaspari’s remarks highlight the shifting dynamics within the bodybuilding community.

While traditionalists may question Sulek’s credentials due to his lack of stage experience, his ability to cultivate a sizable online following cannot be ignored. Gaspari acknowledges the importance of balancing physical prowess with social media savvy in today’s era.

The 60-year-old drew a comparison between Sulek and other bodybuilders’ social media presence. “I’m an old school guy and you know the big guys you know that are competing. The big names but some of the guys that have huge you know they’re doing great in bodybuilding don’t really um are good at social media you have to have a combination of both to really really be a star,” stated the golden slayer.  Gaspari’s perspective underscores the necessity for adaptability in an industry undergoing profound transformation.

While Gaspari doesn’t seem too impressed with Sulek, others have taken a liking to the young fitness influencer. Including seven-time Mr. Olympia winner Arnold Schwarzenegger.
