The Shadow explained that the subconscious controls the way you perform in the gym. Yates mentioned that if you think that you’ll be aiming for four sets, then your mind works that way. It doesn’t push you into the first or second set, but it lets you save energy for the rest of the sets left.
“If you do all that set on an exercise to failure and that you’ve gone to failure, there is no point in doing it. All we’re going to do is then basically, you know, shoot on a dead horse,” said the six-time Mr. Olympia. Continuing, Yates highlighted that this will only “put more stress on top of your body, which doesn’t require because you’ve sent the message already.”
The Shadow mentioned, “One set to failure and move on.” The former Mr. Olympia summarized and said, “Mentally as well, I had that mindset of giving myself one chance to get it right in this set and move on, it was easier to handle.”
