Creating a legacy of one’s own has never been easy, no matter which sport one plays, yet Dorian Yates proves at times that the circumstances he has been through are unlikely to be faced by the majority of the fitness community. Growing his interest in bodybuilding from prison, Yates had shown his skills like a prodigy, winning his very first Mr. Olympia on his second try and never letting anyone snatch his crown for six consecutive years. This time, he recalls an old incident that spoke to his determination for the sport.

The English bodybuilder explained how one time, when he was living in Ladywood, in one of the council flats, he was situated about 2–3 miles away from the gym and the city center as well. While living there, he once faced a snowstorm, yet he made it through the adversary and reached his gym.

The shadow retold the story of him trudging through the snow to reach the gym. He explained that although it takes about 20 minutes to reach his gym, that day he surpassed the time and took almost an hour and a half to reach it.

He stated, “There were no cars on the road, so there’s no cars, no buses, there’s no transport. I trudged through that snow, up past my knees to the gym. It took me about an hour and a half to get to the gym from a couple of miles. It usually takes 20 minutes or something but took me an hour and a half. I got to the gym with a key, and nobody was there.”

Moreover, he also explained how he sought comparisons with those people who were not utilizing their time and were enjoying their comfort. He believed that they would have to pay for the loss of time. He stated, “And I thought to myself, ‘You know what, those f*ckers in California right now, they are driving their Porsche, their Ferrari, out in the sun, going to the beach. I’m here trudging through the snow. And they are gonna pay for it, and I’m not taking a day off.”

When The Shadow was asked about his motivation towards bodybuilding, he explained how he was so determined towards his training and eventual victory on the stage.

Dorian Yate’s training method

Yates once explained how he sought to incorporate all his anger and frustrations and combine them together in the form of his training. He firmly believed that putting all of those emotions together in training helped me have a more intense exercise session, which he has always vouched for. He stated, “I took all the negative things. I took all the anger that I had about my life. What happened, whatever, doesn’t matter what it is. You take it all and put it all into the training.

It is certainly not easy to have such strong motivation toward one’s passion, but it’s only because of the will power Yates possessed that he stood out from the rest and had such a long list of achievements.
