Arnold served the remainder of Davis’ incomplete term between 2003 and 2007. He was then reelected to a second term in 2006, serving out this full term and leaving office in January 2011. Schwarzenegger was unable to run for a third term due to term limits imposed by the Constitution of California. Even though he brought some significant changes politically, his ex-wife Maria Shriver was not sure about how good of a political leader Arnold could be.
During an event at the Sacramento Press Club, Arnold Schwarzenegger took a look back in time and reflected on his tenure as the 38th governor of California. He said, “My wife kept saying, you know, you’re a campaigner. You’re a great campaigner. You’re so competitive. It’s like unbelievable the way you are, I mean, you’re so competitive, but just remember the next step is you have to deal with policy. It was kind of like a threat.”
Arnold proved his ex-wife wrong
Despite his own partner doubting him amidst a million other people, Arnold Schwarzenegger took time and channeled his energy in the right direction. He spent hours and hours in libraries reading books and getting to learn about the history and functioning of a nation.

Talking about Maria’s perspective when it came to Arnold being a governor, he disclosed, “She didn’t have much faith in me when it comes to policy. She knew I was competitive, but she felt like I’m not going to like sitting there for hours and learning about, you know, gun control or nurses problems that they have or prison guards problems that they have with teachers and this and that I will not be really equipped for that kind of thing.”
