A gym is a place that requires a lot of attention and responsibility from the lifter’s side. Before touching a set of dumbbells or an iron plate, the person lifting them must be completely confident in himself/herself that he/she can complete the set. Taking precautions while lifting heavy is one of the most critical aspects. This is where the importance of lifting belts, straps, and power racks comes in.

However, despite using all the measures and having a spotter by your side, ego lifting can lead to negative repercussions. Greg Doucette, an IFBB pro bodybuilder, recently highlighted this in a post on Instagram, where he included a video of an unidentified person squatting extremely heavy. While the set was a complete waste of time, as the range of motion was next to nothing, it also posed a severe threat to his joints and body.

While pushing yourself is essential for muscle hypertrophy and strength gains, there is a thin line between ego lifting and risking your health and body. The fitness industry has already witnessed the consequences of ego lifting. With the recent death of Indonesian bodybuilder Justyn Vicky, the world observed the result of heavy lifting without precautions. IFBB pro Greg Doucette often points out such incidents, using his social media posts and YouTube videos to educate his audience about the consequences of such activities.

His recent Instagram post saw a man squatting a ton of weight. While he had a spotter with him to assist time, the bent bar and his poor range of motion made it evident that the weight was way too much for the person to lift.

Doucette posted the video in an attempt to create awareness about the issue. While he always preaches to not ego-lift, the comments on his video saw many pointing out the flaw in the man’s form.

Netizens were not happy to see the bodybuilder’s heavy squatting video

A person sarcastically wrote, “Perfect form! Good job sir! At this rate, you should be In a wheelchair by tomorrow! Keep at it man, you’re doing great!” While another user mentioned a common phrase used by Greg in his videos and altered it according to the situation. He wrote, “Spotting harder than last time.” Taking a jibe at his form, another comment read, “His spotter got in deeper than he did.”

Another hilarious comment pointing out the stupidity stated, “According to newest research squating this low is bad for your knees.” Indicating the dangers of ego lifting, a fan also wrote, “RIP to another good barbell victim of ego lifting,” while another person commented, “Zero reps done.”
