Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in the timeless action-sci-fi classic Predator in 1987. The film spawned a franchise that’s still alive and kicking nearly four decades later. However, besides Predator, the bodybuilding legend starred in a camp classic adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Running Man. Now, the less popular 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film is about to get a remake.

Renowned director Edgar Wright, known for films like Scott Pilgrim vs. the WorldShaun of the Dead, and more, is at the project’s helm. The original film was more of an action flick with one-liners rather than a faithful adaptation of King’s novel. Perhaps that’s why The Running Man had a production budget of $27 million yet earned just $38 million.

Edgar Wright isn’t looking for a faithful remake

Filmmaker Edgar Wright became interested in the project in 2021 and has been working on the script since then. Producer Simon Kinberg said that they are working on the project actively. Wright is working with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World screenwriter Michael Bacall to finish the script. Kinberg also said they are ready to start filming in 2024 and a possible 2025 release.

While the 2025 release is likely, it’s not confirmed. However, Wright and the producers might be gunning to release the remake in 2025 because the novel is set in the same year. Stephen King penned The Running Man in 1982. In his book, America in 2025 has devolved into a dystopia after the world economy crashed.

The novel revolves around Richard Bachman, who participates in the government-sponsored fugitive game show The Running Man to save his wife and child. However, the Arnold Schwarzenegger film only follows the basic premise. Schwarzenegger’s cult classic focuses more on the action, where Arnie fights and defeats hunters like videogame mini-bosses. Meanwhile, King’s novel has a far bleaker tone, and that’s exactly what Wright is trying to capture with the remake. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to have no qualms about it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t have any opinions

The 1987 film isn’t among the most appreciated action films of the Hollywood star’s career. Arnie also seems indifferent about the project. Since Wright wants to make a faithful remake, the film will barely resemble the 1987 film. Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t interested in starring in the remake in any capacity either.

However, while appearing on the Rich Eisen show, the 76-year-old said he is “happy” that Edgar Wright is making The Running Man. Schwarzenegger, who was never keen on remakes or sequels, said “They can do whatever they want.” It seems the Austrian Oak won’t be associated with the project in any way. So, what did you think about the project? Do you feel Edgard Wrigth’s remake will be superior in every aspect? Tell us in the comments.
