There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach when it comes to fitness and bodybuilding. Every individual has different preferences and distinct methods to go about with their fitness journey. However, the age-old question that most individuals still have is about the optimum rep range for muscle building. While there are individuals who train at a higher rep range of 15-20 reps, there are some lifters who do as low as 3-6 reps.
Clearing the air on this, 4x Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler revealed in a recent YouTube short what, according to him, is the most optimum rep range. He also disclosed that this is something that worked the best for him. Talking about this, he briefly also discussed the impact of 7X Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s iconic movie ‘Pumping Iron’.

Through his years of hard work and determination, Jay Cutler built a massive mass-monster physique that helped him lift the Sandow trophy four times in his life. Getting the throne from Ronnie Coleman was not an easy task for sure for ‘The Comeback Kid.’ What separated the duo in terms of training was the rep range that they preferred. While Cutler used to train hard, he emphasized performing higher reps. Educating his audience about the same, he recently admitted in a video that he relied on “Eight to 12 repetitions.”
Talking further about this, Cutler revealed, “People ask me the most “why if not four to seven reps or three reps or two reps or…” You know the truth is any rep range can build muscle, higher reps are more for building the round, more inflated muscle look.”
Cutler also admitted, “Higher rep ranges always worked better.” He even admitted that he also took inspiration from Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Pumping Iron.’
Cutler’s motivation from ‘Pumping Iron’
Back in 1977, when Pumping Iron came out, it became a sensation in the bodybuilding community. Inspiring countless individuals to take up fitness and bodybuilding ever since the movie successfully managed to influence people like Jay Cutler as well.
