Jay Cutler has had an incredible career. From dethroning The King of bodybuilding, 8x Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman, to being the only Mr. Olympia who avenged his loss, Cutler made incredible achievements. However, in a recent video, the bodybuilding icon shared he never planned to become a pro bodybuilder. In fact, people complimented his physique when Cutler worked in construction, and it made the champion reconsider.

Cutler studied the sport of bodybuilding and realized while he had developed a few body parts, the others were lacking. He also had an abysmal diet. Surprisingly, the bodybuilder whose quad stomp stunned the bodybuilding world made his initial gains on that abysmal diet.

Cutler started putting on muscle when he started working in the construction business. The gains became so noticeable that “everyone would say, well, you lift weights.” However, when the 49-year-old revealed he only worked in construction, people would be surprised. Cutler soon realized he might be able to build a good physique with training.

However, there were a few obstacles in his way. “I was ripped, but I hadn’t developed a great physique,” Cutler confessed in the video. While the former Arnold Classic champion might be famous for his quad stomp, starting out, he didn’t have the best legs in the business. The Comeback Kid revealed he had “good shoulders” but “very skinny legs.”

The four-time Mr. Olympia’s diet was also unhealthy. “I mean, at the time my diet was basically pizza burgers, and whatever,” said Cutler. While bodybuilders have junk food during bulking, living on fast food is a different matter. While fast food might be high in calories, they have poor nutritional value.

Despite that, the high calories, coupled with hard work at construction sites, might have worked in Cutler’s favor. While the 49-year-old had a less-than-ideal diet as a novice, things changed drastically once he took bodybuilding seriously.

Once Cutler began competing, his diet became far more strict. However, when the Arnold Classic champion was in his prime, his diet changed drastically. To defeat Ronnie Coleman, Cutler had to dial up the calories. This time, Cutler couldn’t go back to pizza and burgers. So he ate insane amounts of protein and took supplements on top of it.

In previous interviews, the 49-year-old revealed he spent millions on diet throughout his career. From buying whole cows to four pounds of meat daily, Cutler left no stone unturned. During one interview, the bodybuilder even admitted to eating for mass and not for taste.
