Dorian Yates and his achievements in the bodybuilding world are known to many. The 6x Mr. Olympia winner has always had his share of fans, owing to the fact that he had to go through a lot of struggles to reach the most significant stage the sport had to offer. The Shadow believed that one could only unleash the true potential of “shrugs” if the right form was followed. If the form is maintained, “shrugs” can be a good exercise to build traps, he wrote, referring to the Trapezius muscle that many fitness enthusiasts focus on in their workout regimes.

Dorian Yates also went on to explain how the current way of doing the exercise only activates a specific part of the muscle. “I often see most people perform shrugs with a ‘straight up and down’ motion. Yes this works the traps, but only really the upper part of the muscle,” he wrote. According to him, when people exercise in this way, “people are missing out on fully stimulating the entire muscle.” As important as how we do a workout is the equipment used for it. Adding on to his tips to perform “shrugs”, Dorian Yates also threw light upon his usual choice of equipment for the popular exercise.
Dorian recommends dumbbells for “shrugs”
For engaging the entire muscle, the legend recommends “shrug” up and back while squeezing the traps.“This will engage the upper, mid and lower parts of the traps,” he revealed. Dorian also asked those engaging in the exercise to lean forward slightly and use dumbbells for the exercise.

“With machines or a barbell for shrugs, it becomes difficult to execute a full range of motion to engage the entire muscle. I have used both of these and I always preferred using dumbbells for training traps,” he stated.
