Lonnie Rashid Lynn, better known to fans and the world as Common, is a rap legend. Common released his debut album in 1992. His 1994 album,?Resurrection?garnered critical claim and put him on a path to success. Nearly two decades into his career, the rapper has stepped into a league of his own. The $45 million worth musician is the first rap artist to win an Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe, and a Primetime Emmy Award. However, in his latest interview, Common talked about his passion for fitness.

Earlier, Common appeared on Men’s Health’s The Rewind interview series. The rapper is the latest addition to the series where other rappers like 50 Cent have featured. As usual, Common looked back at his journey through pictures taken at various points in his life. During the interview, MH asked,?“How do you fit fitness into your music and movie-making career?”

Fitness empowers the artist’s creativity

Besides making music, Common has also starred in many films since the late 2000s. In response to the question, the rapper-cum-actor said fitness has been an integral part of his life. While many artists incorporate fitness into their lives to be healthier, for Common, it’s more than maintaining his health and wellness.?“Fitness is part of who I am. It’s my being,”?said Common.

The Academy Award winner explained how exercising enhances his creative process.?“In everything you do in music and in film, you bring in some elements of you to it,” said the 51-year-old. Common explained that the characters he plays in films and TV have their essence. As an actor, it’s up to him to capture that essence and imbue the character with some of his essence.

Hence being fit and taking care of his body means Common can bring his best to?“music and the way I bring my best to films and TV and my character.”?Fitness also helps the rapper beat the stress of his busy schedule.

How exercise can help clear the mind

Common isn’t the only person who has benefited from the stress-busting qualities of exercise. Arnold Schwarzenegger often writes about the brain-boosting power of exercising. According to the bodybuilding legend, even going for a 30 min walk can help beat stress and anxiety. Fitness also helps develop self-control and discipline.

In one of the previous The Rewind interviews, rap legend 50 Cent described the benefits of working out. While 50 Cent landed with the wrong crowd and got get to a juvenile correctional facility, bodybuilding and exercise helped him focus his mind. Common’s admission about fitness makes him the latest in a long line of successful people who have embraced fitness for a better life.?
