Bodybuilding veteran, Rich Gaspari has persistently issued comparisons between bodybuilders of the present and the past, based on drugs and mass. In the most recent instance, he pointed out how calf muscles were a crucial part of training during the 80s and 90s. However, with time, the importance has faded, and modern athletes do not focus on calves’ training as much. Days after this statement, former Mr. Universe, Mike O’Hearn shared an expert calves workout tip which was followed by the legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger

The intriguing bit was featured in former strongman giant, Hafthor Bjornsson’s latest interview on YouTube. The duo chatted about calf muscles and the most efficient training to help them stimulate and grow. While Bjornsson seemed to have little knowledge about the aspect, O’Hearn unveiled the iconic workout that led to one of the greatest calves in the sphere.

As per the interview, the 34-year-old G.O.A.T’s massive calves caught O’Hearn’s eye as he acclaimed him for flaunting those natural muscles. “I got a trick from Arnold, you ready or this?” the bodybuilder implied. He shared that Schwarzenegger once gave him a piece of his wisdom and discussed how he stimulated and gained his almost non-existent calves.

The 54-year-old star revealed that calves are distinct from other body parts, and the muscles are comparatively dense. Thus, the training for biceps does not yield similar results for calf muscles. “Like biceps, you train maybe once or twice a week and they’ll grow and maybe six…nine sets,” he chimed in. However, as per the Austrian Oak’s advice, training with a single exercise for five days a week with 5 sets of 20 reps, would do the work.

In addition to that, O’Hearn told, going “as heavy as you possibly can” is also a must because it acts as a “demand to grow because there’s such a dense muscle you’re forcing them to grow.” He ended his revelation on a reflective note. The athlete-turned-actor said, “And look at what they did, one of the greatest calves on stage ever”. Intrigued, Bjornsson claimed that he never really trained his calves, which further left the bodybuilder stunned.

By the same token, Gaspari took to his social media to elucidate his focus on calves training while highlighting his prime days.

Taking to his Instagram, the 59-year-old icon took the initiative to call attention to the importance of calf training. He shared a video of an intense workout, that spotlighted his insane calves back in his pro competing days. Moreover, through his caption, he iterated a debatable statement about the modern generation of athletes.

“I found this old video on calf training. Seems today the calf muscle is not as important to train and many of today’s Bodybuilders neglect calves,” the caption read. Besides that, he also disclosed that he trained his calves with intense workouts since it was an essential part of training in the past. The three-time Mr. Olympia runner-up wrote, “It was an important muscle back in the ’80s And 90’s.”
