Exercise Scientist Dr. Mike Israetel isn’t shy about critiquing celebrity workouts. Some of Israetel’s most popular videos have been those where he picks apart the training regimens of famous celebrities like Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Jake Gyllenhaal, and more. However, this time, Dr. Mike critiqued three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes‘s training regimen.
The one thing that was common between Mahomes’ and Israetel’s other celebrity training critique videos was the source. The bodybuilding coach picked the Men’s Health video where Bobby Stroupe explained how he helps the NFL star maintain his strength and conditioning. Stroupe said that he has trained Mahomes since he was in fourth grade, but his coaching didn’t impress Israetel.
The exercise scientist didn’t pull any punches as he criticized the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s training program. The Sports Physiology PhD holder started criticizing Stroupe‘s exercise selection from the moment he started explaining. Stroupe explained that sit-up medicine ball throws help the footballer “understand how to move his body from the waist up.”

However, Mike Isreatel immediately disagreed with the strength and conditioning coach. The competitive bodybuilder said the moves help Mahomes generate explosive power in his anterior chain. Israetel also didn’t agree with Stroupe’s analysis of developing torso and spinal resilience through track and field training, instead of weights.
While Mahomes’s coach said you can’t get the “pathetic” strength through weights, Israetel disagreed. The disagreement continued with sled pulls and pushes. While Stroupe claimed sled pushes trained “flexibility and foot mobility,” Israetel remarked that the coach was wrong. He also said that isometric training is useless for an athlete.
Although Bobby Stroupe made Mahomes perform isometric pull-ups and deadlifts, the exercise scientist thought it was a waste of time. Instead, Mike Israetel explained that athletes need to train with a complete range of motion, so they become strong throughout the entire range of motion. So, what did Mike Israetel recommend?

The Exercise Scientist said strength and conditioning was simple
Dr. Mike Israetel explained that Boddy Stroupe made strength and conditioning needlessly complicated for the NFL quarterback. Israetel recommended mastering the basics of strength training instead of doing complicated movement drills. The exercise scientist said that Mahomes needed to train with heavy weights, utilizing his body’s range of motion.
Dr. Mike also pointed out that most of the work Stroupe made Mahomes do would tire him out rather than improve his strength. According to exercise scientists, one needs to master basic movements like squats, deadlifts, and pull-ups. Israetel said that instead of doing isometrics, and sled pulls, Mahomes would be better off progressively overloading standard exercises.
