Legendary bodybuilders Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu shared a deep bond. Moreover, the two times Mr. Olympia was the Best Man in Arnie’s wedding to Maria Shriver in 1986. The duo would be inseparable since the time they met in Munich. Their friendship took them to great heights of success. They also share a similar career trajectory—both icons moved to the silver screen. Franco Columbu’s passing in 2019 was hard on the Terminator. However, he was thankful for the 54 years of friendship they shared. Earlier, the Austrian Oak shared a throwback training video of the dynamic duo in the unlikeliest of places—a ballet session. 

Despite reaching the zenith of bodybuilding, Schwarzenegger continued to push himself in his prime. His humility in accepting that to ‘err is human’ makes him a fascinating individual. Through his recent social media post, he teaches that there is no finishing point to greatness.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu take ballet lessons together

Taking to Twitter, the bodybuilding legend shared a ballet training session with the caption,” People always wonder why Franco and I took ballet lessons…” The video shows Arnold and Franco Columbu gracefully flowing from one pose to the next on the instructions of their ballet teacher. They make wavy arm gestures while sliding their legs forward, leaning into the pose.

The teacher explains, “What you want is mobility.” Furthermore, the graceful coach teaches Schwarzenegger to flex his bicep muscles while looking up so that his face and arms are in the same direction. It would give the audience a better view of his chiseled face and peaked biceps. She adds, “You have to realize that people are watching you all the time.”

Schwarzenegger posted a Twitter thread explaining his decision to learn ballet. He added,

The Terminator’s final tweet was a shout-out to the Arnold Pump Club, urging followers to join the village. He is a lesson for the present cohort of bodybuilders to seek inspiration in various sports. The Austrian Oak believed that even the most successful should continue to hone their skills. He added, “Because even if we’re the best, we can always be better. Because we’re never going to be perfect, but we can always make progress.” Staying true to his spirit, the bodybuilder channeled his performative abilities onto the silver screen. Columbo and Schwarzenegger tasted success in movies as well.

The multifaceted personalities leave an indelible mark on the silver screen

The bodybuilders first appeared together in the 1977 Pumping Iron documentary. Eventually, the Italian actor would star in Schwarzenegger’s’ Terminator franchise. However, their bonhomie is best captured in the 1993 movie Beretta’s Island, produced by Columbo. In the movie, the 5’5 actor plays the role of a retired Interpol officer forced to avenge his friend’s death. The 7-time Olympia plays Columbu’s trainer in the movie, giving them another chance to train together on the silver screen. However, in real life, the friends often worked out together at Gold’s Gym.

Schwarzenegger had many contemporaries with a bigger physique than his, for example, Lou Ferrigno. However, the Governator’s charming presence on stage was unmatchable. Arnie elevated bodybuilding to an art form with his ingenious methods and visionary approach.
