Ultramarathon athlete Ross Edgley recently took to his Instagram and shared why every athlete needs to train at maximal speed, with a depiction of himself sprinting on the treadmill at a high speed. He states that maximal speed is one of the best predictors of endurance performance and suggests that it might even be better than aerobic capacity.

Pointing out research conducted, he says that the intersection between increased maximum speed and increased performance in endurance events is the nervous system. He wrote, Distance training has traditionally focused on improving the aerobic energy systems, which (although important) neglects the nervous system.”

However, in contrast to that, maximum training allows one to engage the nervous system by activating every neural pathway. Due to this, there is an enhanced efficiency in the communication between the muscles and the nervous system, which allows one’s body to engage in more hyperactive exercises with the use of less oxygen. But that’s not all.

Highlighting another benefit of training at maximal speed, Ross Edgley believes it is immensely helpful in increasing one’s speed reserve, “which is the difference between max speed and race pace.”

When someone works out at a faster pace than usual, it makes the race pace more relaxed, and that helps enhance the difference between maximum speed and one’s race pace. He adds,In a practical sense, working consistently at faster paces makes race pace seem more relaxed”.
