Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s son, Joseph Baena, recently spilled some cool tips on building muscles, and it’s not just about lifting heavy weights. According to the budding bodybuilder, muscle building was “not just a numbers game.”
Building muscles is a tough task, it requires being consistent and maintaining discipline. However, Baena has taken to his Instagram account and shared a few methods for those looking to get chest development that he and his father flaunt. According to the 26-year-old, it’s not about how many reps you do; it’s about making a connection between your mind and muscles.

Baena posted a snippet of his routine, working on his chest muscles, and doing neutral flys using a cable machine. He called this the “mind-muscle connection.” Instead of just going through the motions, he emphasized that one should feel the stretch and squeeze with each rep. It is all about, “Quality reps over quantity any day!”

He explained his workout plan to help others, and mentioned in his post caption that “Muscle building is an art, not just a numbers game.” According to Baena, proper form was super important, especially during exercises like chest flies. He pointed out that many people mess up by involving their shoulders or collapsing their chest. Baena suggested lowering the weight if needed, banking on “quality over quantity”.
However, he did mention that there’s a time for “cheat reps,” but this only comes into play after one gets their mind-muscle connection right. According to him, focusing on form makes your workout safer and more effective. The son of the bodybuilding legend also acknowledged a common mistake individuals made by not keeping their chest up during the exercise. He suggested that concentrating on pecs and keeping a good posture throughout the session would help.
Interestingly, among Arnold Schwarzenegger’s five children, only Baena chose to follow in his father’s footsteps to assist people in shaping their physique. Just before the dawn of the New Year, Baena had announced the introduction of his new training program.
The Fundamentals: Baena’s workout program
On December 31, 2023, Joseph Baena launched an exciting workout program called The Fundamentals. What makes it special? Well, unlike typical online plans, it isn’t just Baena’s ideas- it’s a blend of wisdom from bodybuilding icons, athletes, and his own experience.

With insights from the seven-time Mr. Olympia and others, Baena has crafted a four-week program to build muscles and strength. It’s intriguing because the program is not a tedious routine; you only need to work out four to six days a week. The program uses the standard push-pull-legs approach and upper-lower body splits as well. Plus, there’s a handy app to track your progress. As Baena recommended in his recent post “Keep that chest up! Focus on the pecs!”
