Even as it may come as a surprise to many, despite looking passive and obese, Hippos are highly muscular beasts. Shared by a fitness channel on Instagram, this has left netizens baffled.

Many conceive these semi-aquatic animals as flabby-looking, vegan-friendly mammals that are aggressive sometimes. But most don’t know that their outward appearance doesn’t correlate with their inner muscular buildup.  

Hippos are 4409 lbs muscular beasts with just 6cm of the subcutaneous fat layer, as per the CGTN website. Their muscular frame helps them run 30 km per hour. Despite being largely herbivorous, their strength and power makes them one of the most dangerous animals in the world. When Gym Fail Nation shared this fact about hippo’s muscularity in a post, this triggered an uproar from the bodybuilding community.

Fitness community looks at the funny side of things

Many found the post intriguing and were happy that a flabby-looking animal was actually muscular. “That’s why I don’t get offended when they call me a hippo,” wrote a funny fitness enthusiast. “Murder machines made of meat,” noted another, underscoring the notorious nature of Hippopotamus. 

I found my spirit animal,” celebrated another bodybuilding lover. “They skip leg day,” lamented a follower, hinting at the slender legs of the water beast. “The Tyson Fury of the animal world (without all the shite he spouts),” declared a netizen. Some even pondered on how they acquired their protein.

Not everything that appears to the eyes is real and the recent fact about the hippos proves that. Despite being regarded as chubby animals, hippopotamus are muscular beasts.
