How Arnold Schwarzenegger iconified a DC villain
Arnold Schwarzenegger already had his brush with comic book adaptations when he did Conan the Barbarian in 1982. However, fast forward 15 years, he was playing a Batman villain from the Arkham Asylum. Mr. Freeze, originally known by his name Dr. Victor Fries, was an emotionally damaged scientist whose desperate attempts to bring back his wife Nora from the dead, leads to the current predicament.
As Schwarzenegger was gearing up for the release of FUBAR a few months ago, Collider did an article on him playing the role of Mr. Freeze with panache and flamboyance. The suit may have looked impractical and the makeup might have been too heavy, but Schwarzenegger enjoyed every bit of dis dialogue delivery, which were mostly puns on ice.
A few years ago, Schwarzenegger did a segment for GQ, where he broke down all of his major roles from his filmography. When he talked about Batman and Robin, he said that he mainly did work with the director Joel Schumacher. He was also paid $30 million for the film.
One of Schwarzenegger’s lesser-known, underrated performances
Director Joel Schumacher and the makeup team of the movie would take 5 hours every day to cover Schwarzenegger in the Mr. Freeze get-up. Despite all that heavy makeup and costumes, Schwarzenegger could pull off every dialogue delivery with a villainy facial expression. Since Mr. Freeze’s main purpose was to bring back his wife Nora and show emotions for her, Schwarzenegger somehow managed to convey that too, showing one of his greatest ranges as an actor.
Now, it is not known if Kevin Feige or anyone over at MCU, or even if James Gunn and DCU, is seriously considering Arnold Schwarzenegger for a role in any upcoming film. But one thing is for sure, for anyone who does consider him for a future project, Schwarzenegger’s role as Mr. Freeze will serve as a blueprint.
