His drive to giving back to society prompted him to enter politics, despite a successful bodybuilding and movie career. But Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s humanitarian efforts didn’t end with the final term of his governorship of California in 2011. He is involved with political matters, and one such important matter close to his heart is climate change.
In a recent interview, he addressed angry protestors. He called out most nations who have failed to live up to their promises despite all signing the Paris Agreement in 2015. Schwarzenegger’s motherland Austria wasn’t exempt from that list.

Arnold Schwarzenegger puts together a climate conference in Vienna every year. This year, the 7th edition of the Austrian World Summit was held on 16th May, where the 7-time Mr. Olympia took center stage and urged everyone, “Times have changed, and we have to change with them.” Schwarzenegger believes that climate change is as real as it gets. He also raised concerns about pollution that are killing nearly a million people globally every year.
During an interview with Laura Kuenssberg of BBC Politics, Schwarzenegger said, “The world signed an agreement in 2015 in Paris to go and to reduce greenhouse gases… 70% of the countries have not really lived up to their promise… including Austria, has not lived up to its promise”. The agreement was discussed and reached by 196 parties and was held at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
He was also asked about his thoughts on various activists gluing themselves to the road, and seeking attention from the government about climate change. While he agreed that it may not be the way to go about it, he can see that people are angry. And their anger is fueled by how the government has failed them.
He is hopeful for a better future
Schwarzenegger said, “The government always find excuses after excuses…”, and that has pushed the youth beyond their limits, forcing them to take the streets. But Schwarzenegger was content in that the world is recognizing this serious issue. He felt that despite the grave nature of the effect, things can change in the healthiest way possible and it starts with every individual waking up to this ongoing issue.

Arnold Schwarzenegger believed (sarcastically) that this ongoing issue regarding climate change and the constant tussle between the government and the activists could very well be a TV series rather than a movie. He also said that the boomer generation must rise up to the occasion and let go of their preconditioned beliefs. As he said, “We have to change with the time.”
