Sleep! One of the most common leisurely habits people often have, especially on weekends after a long, hard week of work. Putting in that extra hour or two of sleep on a day to rejuvenate the body and mind might seem like a good idea, but not according to Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bodybuilding legend once again cites a research-backed study to explain why such a habit might do more harm than good. Having gone through multiple surgeries, Schwarzenegger knows the pain and struggle of what the body feels like when it reaches a stage that requires surgery.

As per a recently published research in the Journal of the American Heart Association, there is evidence of a connection between irregular sleep patterns and atherosclerosis. So, in order to avoid any such afflictions for his 431,000 “village” members i.e. newsletter subscribers and beyond, Arnold Schwarzenegger explains why it is important to set a specific sleep pattern and stick to it, no matter what.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daily newsletter ‘Arnold’s Pump Club’ is back, and this time, of many other topics, Schwarzenegger is talking about a basic habit that needs fixing for one’s own good, and that is Sleep Patterns. As per Arnold’s newsletter, ‘Sleeping In’ might be a habit that many have, but it can’t be afforded on a daily basis. Whereas sleep patterns are of much more grave importance.

Schwarzenegger wrote, “Researchers found that irregular sleep patterns are associated with a higher likelihood of atherosclerosis.” It is a condition where a sticky substance called ‘plaque’ builds up inside the arteries. Schwarzenegger further clarified, “People with greater sleep irregularity.. – had more plaque buildup in their arteries…This is not about an ideal bedtime or number of hours you must sleep… It’s more about creating a consistent schedule that determines when you go to bed and how long to sleep.”

While he previously said how 7-9 hours of daily sleep is a healthy amount, this one is more about setting a specific time to sleep at night and maintaining that daily without any deviance or failure. But there are practical issues his ‘village’ might face.

Irregular sleep is killing more people than anything in America

Schwarzenegger wrote, “If your job doesn’t let you sleep at the same time, the research provides some clues about how much variation you can have without causing help problems,” for those who need that extra long hour at night to work and there’s less stability in their work hours. But essentially, Schwarzenegger conveys that the aim of sleeping at one specific time should always be the main motive.

One of the few things Schwarzenegger learned from his heart surgeries is that he can’t be doing any heavy exercises thereon, and the inability to do something wholeheartedly he so dearly loves, is very costly. Hence, he is always looking out for his “village”. Atherosclerosis and the diseases linked to it are the leading cause of death in the United States, as per the National Institute of Health. And about 50% of Americans from the ages of 45-84 have this disease without their knowledge.
