Bodybuilding veteran and former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, once sacrificed one of his most precious collectibles in an attempt to bring about change. Back in 2006, Schwarzenegger made headlines when he parted ways with six of his seven Hummers. This bold move by ‘The Austrian Oak’ was an indication of his care towards the environment and a call to action for the citizens as well as policymakers to bring about a much-required change.

Arnie’s decision stood as a statement of his will to work for a sustainable future, signaling that prominent entities can provoke thought among the society that can help bring about a change in society.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sacrifice to protect mother nature

Hummers were always one of Arnold’s favorite cars. His collection of Hummers was a symbol of his power and luxury. However, these gas-guzzling vehicles are also known for their annulling effects on environmental degradation. Upon taking up the role of Governor of California, Arnold realized the need to bring change. And what better way than to start from your own home? After all, he referred to himself as ‘The Green Governor.’

After making up his mind in 2006, the $450 million worth actor gave up six of his seven Hummers, which were approximately worth a million dollars. He just kept one of them, which he then converted to run as a hybrid vehicle. “They are hydrogen engines and bio-fuel engines and one is being changed into an electrical engine,” Schwarzenegger noted to The Telegraph about his former fleet of green-friendly vehicles on a visit back in 2013 with the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.

During his tenure as governor, Schwarzenegger actively pursued green policies and initiatives. Arnold insists that “we should let them know they can be part of the solution by changing the technology in that car.” To prove his point, he kept his green Hummer and got it transformed in such a way that it now runs on vegetable oil.
