A 21-year-old college student in India has died while working out in the gym. The deceased, named Siddharth, hailed from Ghaziabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The gym’s CCTV camera captured the shocking incident of the first-year engineering student who had talked to his mother on the phone ten minutes before his death. Siddarth was an only child.?

A news outlet, The Tatva, obtained the CCTV footage of the young man’s final moments and posted it on Instagram. The video shocked fitness enthusiasts on the platform and concerned individuals also asked an important question.

A deadly cardio session

The treadmill is among the most commonly used pieces of equipment in the gym. Treadmills are universally used for cardio and warm-ups. Only this time, walking on the treadmill turned deadly for 21-year-old Siddharth. In the CCTV footage The Tatva posted, the young man can be seen walking on a treadmill with earphones on. Shortly after, things took a turn for the worse.

The footage shows the youngster struggling to keep himself upright. He takes his feet off the treads to balance himself but slowly loses grip and falls. The footage also shows two gymgoers rushing to his aid before the video ends. The news outlet wrote that fellow gymgoers rushed the youth to the hospital, but the doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

“According to the doctor, it appeared that Siddharth suffered from heart failure,”?wrote The Tatva.?Whether it’s a professional bodybuilder or a college-going student, cardiac arrests have become fairly common. Studies have found an increased mortality rate in Indians (aged 20?40) due to cardiac arrest. Further, cardiac arrests contribute to 436,000 deaths each year in the U.S.A.

The fitness world mourns and raises a concern

One user expressed their sympathy toward the deceased Siddharth and his family.?“What a tragedy, may he rest in peace, my deepest sympathy and lots of prayers to his family, I can’t imagine the pain they are going through,”?wrote the user. Another user wrote a similar message.?“Rest in peace….this is disturbing. May God give strength to your family,”?read the comment.

“Shocking. May his soul rest in peace,”?wrote another. However, many people in the comments raised a common concern.?“They should have tried CPR immediately!”?wrote one commenter about the two gymgoers who tried to help the youth.?“Schools must teach us how to give CPR in such situations,”?another individual commented.

The 21-year-old’s death has shocked the fitness community. But more so, the occurrence has echoed the importance of learning first aid techniques like CPR.
