The craze for bodybuilding has indeed become scary, as the fitness community goes on adapting disturbing methods to craft the perfect physique. From abusing st*roids to taking up supplements that the human body should not consume, the fitness community is under deep waters. In a recent turn of events in New Delhi, India, doctors at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital managed to pull out 39 coins and 37 magnets from the intestine of a patient on 26th February 2024.
The patient was previously known to be suffering from some psychiatric disease and happened to swallow the coins and magnets because he was under the impression that zinc would help him rigorously go through a physical transformation. He came to the hospital with uneasiness and was vomiting repeatedly, claiming to have had abdominal pain 20 days ago.

He was initially taken under the care of a senior consultant, Dr. Tarun Mittal in the OPD. It was then that the patient’s relative revealed that he had a history of eating coins and magnets, and has been doing so for the last few weeks. An X-ray of his abdomen showed radio-opaque shadows in the shape of coins and magnets in his abdomen.
Adding to all the more evidence, a further CT Scan of the abdomen displayed a heavy load of coins and magnets which was causing blockage of the intestine. As soon as they found this out, he was taken into surgery, and 7 days later was discharged in a healthy condition. But, how did this happen and what made the reaction so intense?

Doctors revealed that the magnetic effect caused the blockage
During the process of surgery, the doctors found that the magnets and coins were stuck in the small intestine in two loops. The magnetic effect pulled both of them together and eroded it. The team of doctors including Dr. Tarun Mittal, Dr. Ashish Dey, Dr. Tanushree, and Dr. Karthik, as reported by ANI, opened up the intestines and removed the foreign substances from his body. The doctors recovered 39 coins of 1, 2, and 5 rupees, and 37 magnets of heart, spherical, star, bullet, and triangle shapes.

They even revealed that the patient had been tolerating the procedure well and on being asked, he confessed that he ingested the coins and magnets because he thought zinc helps in bodybuilding. He consumed the coins. They had zinc and magnets because they would help the coins stay in the intestine to facilitate more absorption. ‘
