The realm of?bodybuilding and personal training is rife with various concepts and syndromes purportedly affecting individuals seeking better posture and overall health. One such term that has gained popularity is?“Upper Cross Syndrome.” However, recent criticism from experts like Dr. Mike Israetel questions the validity of this condition, suggesting it is maybe nothing more than a fabrication used by some personal trainers to deceive their clients.
In his recent YouTube video in his ongoing series ‘Exercise Scientist vs. Hollywood workouts, he reacted to a video of Mark Wahlberg’s personal trainer, Brian Nguyen, the man who has been working with Wahlberg for several years now revealed that Mark is also a victim of the upper cross syndrome. Dr. Israetel, however, believes this to not be the case.

Upper Cross Syndrome presents as a postural imbalance wherein some muscles become weakened and lengthened, while others become tight and shortened, forming a cross-like pattern. This condition mainly impacts the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, often linked to factors like poor posture, prolonged sitting, and repetitive movements.
Mike’s primary concern is that such a syndrome oversimplifies the complexities of postural imbalances.?“This is make-believe PT bullshit.”?stated Israetel.?“Posture is mostly genetic. It has almost nothing to do with muscle strength, its just how you usually sit,”?he added.

Continuing further, Israetel revealed,?“There’s no exercise you need to do in the gym.”?Concluding his point, Mike hilariously stated,?“Where the f**k do these people come from.? Wait a minute… Hollywood.”?This is not the first time that Mike has bashed a Hollywood trainer. Just a short while ago,?Israetel made a video on Bradley Cooper’s workout routine for his ‘American Sniper.
The error in Cooper’s workout regimen
During a video in which Cooper’s trainer revealed his workout for the movie role, he revealed that Cooper’s routine majorly revolved around performing elevated trap bar deadlifts. Explaining the negative side of the exercise, Mike pointed out, “worst possible exercise you can do for putting on lots of muscle safely. Why? It trains so much of the body at the same time, that there’s no specific muscle that pushes to its limits and thus elicits a lot of muscle.”

Continuing with the reasoning, he explained,??By doing only partial reps, at the top end of movement, you?re avoiding entirely the deep painful stretch at the bottom of almost every exercise that causes the most muscle growth.?
