In this short clip, Yates began with, “A lot of people know, but I logged every single workout. So every workout from 1983 to 1997, I got it all, logged down, and trained a little bit more frequently.” From 1983 to 1997, he recorded every single workout. This practice allowed him to track his progress over the years and make informed decisions about his training.

Furthermore, analyzing the data, he experimented with training frequency, adding an extra day here and there. This analytical approach helped him understand what worked and what didn’t. He also mentioned that he was inspired by the HIT philosophy of Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer. Yates found logic and precision in their theories. However, he was quick to point out that theory alone is not enough- it must translate into real results.

So, he put it to the test. The Shadow discovered that by training with high intensity but for a shorter duration, he could push his body to the limit and then allow it adequate time to recover and grow. The 60-year-old described the process as brutalizing oneself for a short period and then giving the body the necessary time to recover and overcompensate, leading to growth.

This principle might seem a bit surprising but has worked well for Yates and many others he has assisted. What makes him stand out is his emphasis on quality rather than quantity. He believes that short, intense training sessions can give better results. His method is all about being efficient and paying attention to your body.

Even in an old Instagram post, Yates mentioned, “But being an analytic thinker and looking at the science behind it, Arthur Jones’ and Mike Mentzers’ philosophy of driving intensity as the main factor made the most sense to me.” He continued and said, “So that’s what I did. I took the wisdom and knowledge of these guys and adapted it to suit my needs and fine-tuned it over the years to formulate what is now known as DYHIT!”

According to him, it’s important to find the right balance between pushing yourself and giving your body enough time to recover. In the quest for fitness goals, Dorian Yates’ lesson is a simple one; sometimes, doing less can actually lead to better outcomes.
