The first edition of Special Olympics started with an aim to focus on ability rather than disability. Chicago’s Soldier Field played host to the event. Intellectually disabled young people participated in the competition, starting a new phase in the history of sports. Maria Shriver’s mother Eunice Kennedy Shriver is the founder of the Special Olympics organization and actively contributed to the movement.
The children of Eunice Shriver are continuing her legacy. Timothy Shriver is the chairman of the organization and along with his sister, Maria Shriver was seen participating in the inauguration ceremony of this year’s version of the Special Olympics. The ongoing special competitions in Berlin celebrate the disabled champions. But a post shared by the organization’s official Instagram handle reflects the emotions attached to it. A clip from the swimming event at the sports festival shows the family of an athlete, Nicole Pietschmann, shedding tears of joy as they witness the successful stride of the swimmer.
A girl and a woman were seen becoming emotional watching their dear one acing the race at the competition. Though initially seen filming the race event, the woman in black soon jumped with joy as the swimmer reached his goal. The event well depicts how the years of struggle were seen transforming into moments of joy and happiness. “I’m not crying, you’re crying. Oh, let’s face it, we’re all crying!” the page captioned the post.
