Exercise scientist Dr. Mike Israetel recently started a series where he scrutinizes Hollywood celebrity workouts. Most celebrity workout videos make it seem like the exercises shown in the videos would help an average person look like their favorite star. However, that’s often not the case, as the fitness trainers appearing in these videos often show only part of the full exercise protocol.

In his most recent video, Israetel scrutinized the workout routine of the president of the 4 AM club, Mark Wahlberg. In his video, Dr. Mike Israetel analyzed the Men’s Health video featuring action star Mark Wahlberg’s long-time trainer, Brian Nguyen. While Nguyen has worked with Wahlberg for a decade and a half, his exercise selection and protocol didn’t impress the sports scientist. In fact, he restored to sarcasm to mock the exercises Nguyen showed.

At the start of the video, Brian Nguyen said he split Wahlberg’s workout into two, day A and day B. He then showed what day A looks like for the Hollywood action star. However, before starting the actual workout, Nguyen showed off a list of warm-up exercises. But Israetel wasn’t impressed with the first exercise the celebrity trainer showed.

The bodybuilder looked with skepticism at the “spine band overhead hold” that the celebrity trainer started off the warm-up with. The athletic performance coach said the unorthodox exercise was “the chaos you have to control.” According to Wahlberg’s trainer, the exercise warms up the entire body as you have to pull and hold the band apart with your arms and legs.

Since the resistance band constantly wants to snap back, one has to control the core and limbs to keep it pulled apart around the body. However, Mike Israetel thought it was nothing but a waste of time. “No my friend if you open up your gym door and three Rottweilers run in that’s chaos you have to control,”?said Israetel. He resorted to sarcasm before bashing the warm-up outright.

The spine band overhead hold looked like a warped version of a much more popular static hold exercise called the hollow body hold, with a resistance band.?“This is you laying down with a f***king band all around your body,”?said the exercise scientist. However, his frustration had just begun.

The following exercise that Nguyen showed in the video infuriated the bodybuilder. The movement was another unorthodox exercise mixing a band pull apart and hip hinge. Another thing that frustrated the exercise scientist was the never-ending warm-up. Nguyen showed one warm-up exercise after another, and Israetel grew impatient.

In fact, Dr. Mike Iraetel even said that none of the warm-ups would help. Not only did he suggest alternate versions of the warm-ups Nguyen showed, but he also didn’t hold back his words. Israetel said that none of the workouts the fitness coach showed would make anyone look like Mark Wahlberg.
