While serving time, he discovered his passion for training. This newfound love for the gym became his escape route, leading him to dream of a bodybuilding career. “Something good was going to come from this, I knew I was on the right track,” Yates recently shared, reflecting on his early struggles.
In a recent Instagram post, The Shadow shared a glimpse of his early life. Initially, Yates faced financial hardships. To support his bodybuilding aspirations, he juggled multiple jobs. “I spent about three hours each day on a bus back then, to and from work, to and from the gym, and time to see Debbie and Lewis, and repeat,” he recalled. Despite this grueling routine, he never wavered in his commitment.

Unlike many of his peers, Yates shunned typical teenage distractions like“chasing girls and partying and stuff”. His dedication was evident in a story he shared from 1985, accompanied by three images. “Pure exhaustion after free weight barbell squats!” he had written, illustrating the intensity of his early training sessions.

The six-time Mr. Olympia trained with powerlifter Pete Mumford and a few others who shared similar strengths and goals. “My training partners were always carefully selected,” he explained. This strategy ensured he remained focused and motivated. Initially, he trained mostly alone until he made significant progress, which made finding training buddies easier. Despite training, Yates had to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, and one of these jobs turned out to be dangerous, forcing him to quit.

Yates had revealed in the post how he worked various jobs, including that of a bouncer. He even recalled a particularly dangerous incident at a nightclub, where a riot broke out. He and his coworkers had to hide in the office for hours until the police arrived to calm the situation. Yates decided that night that this would be his last time working in nightclubs because it was too risky. Despite these challenges, Yates remained optimistic, believing that better financial times were ahead. “I was living my passion,” he stated.

His commitment to his workouts was unwavering. The photos of him squatting from 1985 capture his dedication. “Whatever it took, I was going to do it. I didn’t care how scary it seemed to be under that amount of weight for squats,” Yates declared. Eventually, through all his heart and efforts, he carved his name in the history of bodybuilding by winning the prestigious Mr. Olympia title six times in a row.
