Mike O’Hearn is a bodybuilder, fitness enthusiast, and host of the Mike O’Hearn Show. Fans call him ‘The Titan’ of the fitness and bodybuilding industry. O’Hearn has got it all: the height, looks, and a chiseled Greek God-like physique. The four-time Mr. Universe winner was also a powerlifting and California Judo champion. Recently, Mike O’Hearn met the 3x Mr. Olympia Frank Zane.

‘The Titan,’ who has appeared on the covers of more than 400 magazines, was in conversation with the 81-year-old, ‘The Chemist,’ as fans call him. They both discussed many topics, including the era of Frank Zane and how things have changed now. Moreover, the conversation took an interesting turn when Mike started talking about the “warrior mentality.”

Frank Zane initially raised the topic of gaining publicity for bodybuilders and ensuring that this is done irrespective of whether they are getting paid for it. He emphasizes the fact that it is important to get on the cover. In response to this, Mike questions Zane, “We had to be in the trenches and win the shows, win the powerlifting, the bodybuilding, Marshall whatever it is we have to win to be in the magazine and we have to be intelligent enough to be at the cover if it’s a cover story.”

In bodybuilding, there is cut-throat competition nowadays, unlike in the old times when there were just three or four primary faces. Today, it’s difficult to analyze whom to put on the cover because every bodybuilder has their strength. Thus, as Mike said, “ So it’s like Joe had to look at me oh no I like how you’re training, I like what you’re doing. Frank, will you do a cover story for me and tell me about your arm workout? They don’t have to do that today. Isn’t there something about that competitive, warrior mentality that I am gonna go head to head with a guy on stage?

Furthermore, he said that the greatest physique in 1979 was Frank Zane’s. Thus, he appreciated the legend that he had a warrior mentality in him at that point in time. O’Hearn concluded his question by asking Zane, “How do you create that if you never do the battle? However, Zane humbly denied the need to possess a warrior mentality.

Zane’s response to Mike’s question

After Mike asked about the Warrior mentality, Zane responded by saying, “I don’t know if you have to have it I think that a lot of people, not a lot of people but some people have been prominent in the magazine, like there was this one guy his name was Larry Powers, years ago it was all there to the reader magazine he never won anything but he had a good look a nice All-American and Weider knew that and he used him.”

More than the warrior mentality and the hunger to win, what brings bodybuilders to the covers of different magazines is their good physique, well-conditioned body, and looks. Nevertheless, due to the cut-throat competition in the realm of bodybuilding nowadays, bodybuilders must work hard and play smartly to reach the apex.
