Although Lou Ferrigno could not lift the Sandow trophy, he left a rich legacy in the bodybuilding world. A contemporary of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ferrigno remained in the shadows of the Austrian Oak despite having a bigger body at 6 feet 5 inches. The consistency and smartness of Iron Oak always trumped Lou’s colossal frame. 

However, fans have not forgotten the contribution of Ferrigno in fitness or films. He immortalized the character of “The Hulk” in 1977. The bodybuilding icon who contributed to mainstreaming bodybuilding into popular culture recently posted a throwback picture, sending fans down memory lane.

Lou Ferrigno shared a throwback picture of 1992 Olympia when he was 43 years old

Taking to Instagram, ‘The Hulk’ posted a throwback picture captioned, “42 years old at the 1993 Mr. Olympia competition.” The snap showed a confident Ferrigno flaunting his biceps while standing on a balcony. In 1992, Mr. Universe made a comeback to the Olympia stage, hoping to win the trophy. However, to his disappointment, the Hulk finished 12th in 1992 and 10th in 1993, thereby sealing his retirement from the sport.

Even in 1975, the tall bodybuilder could not capture the judge’s eyes. However, his resilience and muscular physique did capture the “Pumping Iron”, the director’s imagination who cast him as the “undergo villain” trying to defeat the 6 feet 2 inches tall Schwarzenegger. Nonetheless, Ferrigno made a change in his career change successfully. He starred in famous movies like The Cage, Hercules, Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and more recently, The Avengers. Ferrigno also won the approval of fans for his muscularity and conditioning. The throwback Instagram post attracted a flurry of comments from his loyal fans.

Mr Olympia during the 1990s was under the grip of Dorian Yates, who won the competition consecutively six times from 1992 to 1997. Ferrigno was not prepared for the competition that had evolved over the years. Dissatisfied with the results, an ardent follower of the Hulk commented, “On Sheer Size and Symmetry, you should have placed much higher. At 43 You Dwarfed Dorian Yates with your MAGNIFICENT FRAME…The judges Needed Eye Glasses.”
