“I got this energy that was almost like violence. You know we all got these things in our lives, traumas, incidents and it’s like whether you’re going to use it or it’s going to affect you in a positive or a negative way so I took that and I used that fuel probably I used a lot of anger that I had in me from my childhood” This is 6 consecutive times Mr Olympia winner, Dorian Yates reflecting on what fuelled him to the heights of greatness that he was able to achieve.
In 1980, at the age of 18, Dorian Yates’ life took a dark turn, and he found himself arrested and in a juvenile detention center. But, the silver lining behind this cloud was that he took up bodybuilding while at the center. This was the start, but a long road lay ahead. In 1986, he became the British Heavyweight champion, and in 1988, he got his Pro card win. Looking back on his journey, Yates recently took to Instagram to look back at this particular achievement.

He further said that a win he registered on 13th November 1988 gave him both the overall British Championship and the chance to compete internationally against the bodybuilding elite. He believed that his size and conditioning were different, like night and day, from 1986. His body had matured, which helped him progress.
He recalled that even though he could succeed in winning the card, it did nothing immediately to improve his existing situation. Despite this, he had a good life because he was living the way he wanted to. Active on social media, Yates often comes up with emotional notes to reminisce about his past victorious life. Earlier, he opened up about his heart and how he chose bodybuilding as the primary goal of his life.
