The bodybuilding GOAT, in his latest newsletter, referred to this phenomenon as “Social Media Kryptonite.” The idea is simple but profound: if you want to be straight away stronger in your fitness journey, stop checking social media before you train. Sounds too easy, right? Well, science backs up his statement.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Arnie mentioned that “Looking at your feed might seem innocent, but doing it before training can lead to a 29 percent decrease in workout performance. The sub-par workouts were the result of mental fatigue. It turns out that swiping and liking burn your self-confidence and mental energy.”
The constant exposure to idealized images and lifestyle can create unrealistic expectations and trigger feelings of inadequacy. This might make you feel less confident and tired. Using social media before exercising can lead to mental fatigue, which in turn, may result in workouts that are not as effective or satisfactory as they could be.
Just like Arnie warned about social media and its impact on health, another bodybuilding great, Phil Heath, had also shared his concerns about its influence on gym-goers.
Phil Heath believes gymgoers are distracted by their phones
The seven-time Mr. Olympia discussed a concerning situation with his fans through Instagram. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and supportive gym environment. He candidly addressed the issue of people being too distracted by their phones in the gym. The Dream Killer urged gym-goers to have a purpose and focus on their workouts instead of spending too much time scrolling social media.

He further expressed his frustration with those who go to the gym without a clear goal or vision about their routine. He suggested creating a playlist to stay focused and achieve more gains and advocated the importance of having clear goals and being effective during workouts. Fewer distractions lead to meaningful, efficient workouts, ensuring better progress in achieving fitness goals.
Not only do they share the number of Sandow trophies, but they also have a similar vision when it comes to fitness and health. What do you think of Arnie and Heath’s thoughts on social media? Let us know in the comments.
