The fitness community all the time comes across new workout and diet fads that can deliver better physical results. Many would come across a fitness routine of walking 10,000 steps a day for an active lifestyle. And the number 10,000 didn’t come from research-based studies but a marketing gimmick.

The history dates back to the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. A company ran a campaign to sell Manpo-kei, a version of a pedometer. The ‘Man’ in the name of the device refers to 10,000, whereas ‘po’ means steps. Eventually, the number was picked up by fitness enthusiasts. Now, a fitness venture is offering $10,000 as a reward for walking 10,000 steps in a day.
